Kali Strata is the main road connecting coastal Yalos with the settlement of Chorio, consisting of 500 stone steps. It is lined with imposing two- and three-storey mansions with elaborate doorframes, elegant balconies facing the sea, decorated pediments and pebbled or paved courtyards, stand out. Τhe lights in the centre of the pediments, the so-called “ox eyes”, are a typical feature of the urban architecture of Symi. The settlement spread from the rocky, highest points of Chorio down to the sea from the late 18th to the early 20th century. As a whole, it follows the neoclassical style.
